Quick Update

Well the cold air is in place and getting colder. I woke this morning with temps at 33.2° now I am at 32.0°. We have had the first accumulation reports come in from NW Alabama in Cherokee with 1/2" of sleet on the ground. The NWS office In Memphis now has its counties in North Mississippi under a Winter Storm Warning as at least 3/4" of ice is possible. I honestly feel like portions of North Alabama will be placed under some type of Winter Storm Warning later today. Some local meteorologists are saying parts of North Alabama could see up to 1/2" of ICE today and tonight. Stay tuned.

Here It Comes.

New models this evening and now the trend appears that the Low looks to be heading a bit further south with the main system and a bit colder as well. This means that during the past day or so the system had been moving a bit further north with the low moving out of Louisiana along I-20 in Alabama and then east towards Georgia. That meant it would most likely have remained mainly rain from Mississippi into Northern Alabama and Georgia during the heaviest precipitation. Now during this same time, the ECMWF (Euro) model had been a bit of an odd man out (so to speak)with the track hugging the northern Gulf coast and indicating the potential for more frozen precipitation further south to near the Tennessee River. The freeze line now looks to dip below the Tennessee/Alabama state line and the NAM shows the Precipitation moving into NW Alabama around noon on Friday and then moving East throughout the afternoon likely as freezing rain. The freezing line should make it near the Tennessee River by 3:00pm and then start moving back to the North. Some models are showing a heavy band of snow from near Highway 72 up towards Nashville. This is not in stone YET all it takes is a jog of the LOW of just a few miles for it all to change again, but it is getting more and more consistent. Stay tuned to local news for the Latest.

REGION...ACTING AS A SOURCE OF COLD AIR FOR THE DEVELOPING STORM
SYSTEM. AS THE STORM TRACKS ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST...COLD AIR WILL
BE DRAWN ACROSS NORTHERN ALABAMA...SETTING THE STAGE FOR A WINTRY
MIX OF PRECIPITATION BEGINNING AS EARLY AS FRIDAY MORNING AND
LASTING THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING.

PRECIPITATION MAY BEGIN PRIMARILY AS FREEZING RAIN OR SLEET EARLY
FRIDAY MORNING IN NORTHWEST ALABAMA...WITH TEMPERATURES HOVERING
NEAR OR JUST BELOW FREEZING. A GRADUAL WARMUP WILL OCCUR DURING
THE MORNING HOWEVER...WITH TEMPERATURES LIKELY CLIMBING ABOVE
FREEZING BY LATE MORNING ACROSS MOST OF THE AREA. PRECIPITATION
WILL SPREAD EASTWARD ACROSS NORTH CENTRAL AND NORTHEASTERN ALABAMA

AIR MASS MOVES ACROSS THE ENTIRE AREA. BLACK ICE MAY ALSO BE A
CONCERN DUE TO REMAINING WATER ON ROADS...BRIDGES...AND OVERPASSES.

TEMPERATURES ON SATURDAY MAY ONLY CLIMB ABOVE FREEZING FOR A FEW
HOURS WHICH MAY NOT ALLOW FOR SIGNIFICANT MELTING OF ANY
ACCUMULATIONS OF ICE OR SNOW. THUS...HAZARDOUS TRAVEL MAY CONTINUE
INTO THE WEEKEND.

SPECIFIC PRECIPITATION TYPE AND AMOUNTS WITH THIS STORM WILL BE
DEPENDENT ON MANY FACTORS INCLUDING THE EXACT TRACK OF THIS
STORM...WHICH REMAINS UNCERTAIN AT THIS TIME. THUS...KEEP ABREAST

No Changes Yet.

Ice probability valid 6am Friday-6am Saturday

Snow probability 6am Friday thru 6am Saturday

Notice the low end probability for snow does extend into North Alabama but that does not mean we will see 4" of snow here. The bulls eye will be in the Smokey Mountains. Our biggest threat still looks to be as the system moves out and we may see some bridge icing later on Friday as the colder air moves in.

...WINTRY MIX OF PRECIPITATION POSSIBLE LATE THIS WEEK...

A STRONG LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL DEVELOP ALONG THE NORTHERN GULF
COAST THURSDAY ALLOWING MOISTURE TO INCREASE ACROSS THE AREA. WITH A
SHALLOW COLD AIRMASS IN PLACE...A WINTRY MIX OF PRECIPITATION WILL
BE POSSIBLE ACROSS THE TENNESSEE VALLEY BEGINNING AS EARLY AS
THURSDAY NIGHT...AND LASTING THROUGH SATURDAY AS THE LOW PRESSURE
SYSTEM MOVES ACROSS THE DEEP SOUTH.

PRECIPITATION WILL CHANGE TO A LIGHT WINTRY MIX LATE THURSDAY NIGHT
AND INTO EARLY FRIDAY MORNING ESPECIALLY ACROSS AREAS NORTH OF THE
TENNESSEE RIVER. TEMPERATURES SHOULD RISE ABOVE FREEZING ACROSS MOST
AREAS ALLOWING ALL RAIN TO FALL DURING THE DAY ON FRIDAY. WITH
FREEZING TEMPERATURES NEARBY...A FEW LOCATIONS MAY BE AT OR SLIGHTLY
BELOW FREEZING DURING THE DAY ON FRIDAY ALLOWING A WINTRY MIX OF
PRECIPITATION TO CONTINUE.

AS COLDER AIR FILTERS INTO THE AREA...A MIXTURE OF LIGHT FREEZING
RAIN AND SLEET WILL DEVELOP FRIDAY EVENING ACROSS NORTHWEST
ALABAMA AND SPREAD EAST ACROSS THE AREA THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT
HOURS. THE WINTRY PRECIPITATION SHOULD END AS LIGHT SNOW FLURRIES
OR FREEZING DRIZZLE ON SATURDAY.

AT THIS TIME...ACCUMULATIONS AND TIMING REMAIN VERY UNCERTAIN AS
MODELS CONTINUE TO BE INCONSISTENT. ALTHOUGH CONFIDENCE REMAINS
LOW...PERSONS ACROSS THE TENNESSEE VALLEY ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO
MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS AS CHANGES MAY BECOME NECESSARY.

Watching Thursday And Into Friday

A major winter storm is forecast now for areas north of Alabama and to the West. as of right now the SPC has Issued a winter storm watch for from Eastern New Mexico, All of Oklahoma, parts of Arkansas and Missouri, and the Northern Texas Panhandle. This watch could be extended even further east into Kentucky and Tennessee by Thursday. Right now with the 12z run the current forecast is right on track with the system bringing heavy snow north of I-40 including Memphis and Nashville. We could see a brief change from rain over to freezing rain and sleet late Thursday into Friday morning, but not expecting any real serious travel problems YET as we are expecting a cold rain of 1-2 inches. Then as the system heads east there could be enough moisture left behind as the colder air invades North Alabama and we could see some type of wintry mix over North Central Alabama and as temps hover just below freezing we could see some minimal bridge icing but do not expect it to be a big deal. Just remember in Alabama in the winter time expect the unexpected as the forecast may change again and again.

What a Difference a Week Makes

Well Alabama weather is one that can never be boring. 70 degree temps and a tornado in Huntsville last Thursday and now a chance (although right now it is slim) for some type of wintry mix by Friday night this week. Right now the GFS is showing a powerful snow or ice storm from near I-40 in Tennessee up to the North. Those living in the Nashville area need to take precautions and monitor this developing weather situation carefully. Around here in North Alabama right now it looks as if the coldest air will be coming in behind the rain we could see 1-2" of rainfall here in the Tennessee Valley. Then on Friday night the cold air will be very shallow and as it dips into Alabama we could see a brief change over to freezing rain, sleet and/or a few snow flakes mixed in. As of right now we do not expect much in the way of travel problems but the forecast will change many times over the next couple days. Those remember the Christmas week storm it looked as if we would get a good snowfall all the way up to the day before it started and everything changed over night. So with that said we will be fine tuning with every model run. The graphic is valid at noon Friday.

Peoples Questions

I have had alot of people ask me why they could not see the funnel all the way to the ground with the tornado in Huntsville. When a tornado develops it is consumed by dirt and debris, so when you see a large or even a weak tornado in the plains there is alot of dirt, clay, and debris when it touches down in a metro area such as Huntsville there is not that much loose dirt in the downtown area and that is one reason that the funnel was never visible all the way down. Anytime you see a funnel cloud look around the ground and see if you see any power flashes or even a little debris being thrown up in the air. Be sure before you report to EMA or NWS. Click the title for Waay31 live coverage of when it touched down and listen to the reports of it being just a funnel cloud.

TORNADO HITS HUNTSVILLE ALABAMA

Well it has happened a tornado has hit Huntsville Alabama. I started out my chase day and went to the area the SPC had predicted for severe weather and even issued a Tornado watch for that area and what happened BUST. As I arrived back in Madison and unpacked my chase vehicle with pea size hail falling all around me I took one last look at the radar and noticed a hook echo near the Space and Rocket Center and I told my wife they might issue a tornado warning, and as soon as I got it out of my mouth the sirens started. I turned on WHNT and they were showing the tornado as the power flashes started. By clicking the title you will see Iphone video of the tornado taken by a fellow storm spotter Josh Roberson and the pictures are from various other ppl including Dan Satterfield,Micheal Bertoldi, and whnt news

Rainy Night, Storms To Come

Well after a night of some extreme weather including the first tornado outbreak of 2010 that saw 14 reported twisters in Texas and Louisiana severe wind damage along the California coast, to large hail in the Arkla-Tex region. This system has now pushed well to the East of Alabama, and our attention turns to this afternoon. The SPC has most all Alabama in a Slight Risk for severe storms as the temperatures reach near 70°. As I type this the sun is now coming out which will only fuel the atmosphere as CAPE values will be between 1000 and 1500 j/kg's. North Alabama has been painted with a 5% tornado risk this afternoon, and the BTI (Baron tornado index) also has the area painted as well. Any storms that do fire this afternoon should pack a punch and with little moisture they could be your plains varaiety LP (low precipitation) Thunderstorms, meaning if tornadoes develop they should be visible and this will be a daylight event. Just be aware that a tornado warning or two is very possible this afternoon, generally in the 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. time frame. All of the storms should be over by 7:00 p.m

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

Chase Potential Looking Good. First Tornado Watches for 2010.

Well the SPC still has north Alabama under a slight risk for severe storms and possible tornadoes tomorrow(Thursday.) This is something that will be watched very closely as CAPE values will be near 1500j/kg's and temps near 70F. Earlier today the first and second tornado watches were issued. There have been 2 confirmed tornadoes in Louisiana today so far. Stay weather aware the next few days as another system possibly stronger than the one we will experience tonight and tomorrow will impact Alabama on Saturday and Sunday.

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR NORTH ALABAMA AND PORTIONS
OF SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE.

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT...

SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS WILL OVERSPREAD THE AREA LATER
THIS MORNING AND THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN WILL BE
POSSIBLE.

ADDITIONAL SHOWERS ALONG WITH SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS WILL IMPACT
THE AREA TONIGHT...ESPECIALLY AFTER MIDNIGHT. RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 1
TO 2 INCHES WILL BE POSSIBLE BY DAYBREAK THURSDAY. ON TOP OF ALREADY
SATURATED GROUNDS...THESE RAINFALL AMOUNTS WILL QUICKLY ELEVATE THE
FLASH FLOOD POTENTIAL. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM
TONIGHT THROUGH 12 PM THURSDAY.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY...

IN ADDITION TO THE HEAVY RAIN AND ELEVATED FLASH FLOOD THREAT...
THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THURSDAY AFTERNOON
AND EVENING AS AN INTENSE STORM SYSTEM MOVES ACROSS THE TENNESSEE
VALLEY. AT THIS TIME...THE PRIMARY THREATS WITH ANY STORMS WILL BE
LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS...HOWEVER AN ISOLATED TORNADO CANNOT
BE RULED OUT.

ANOTHER STRONG STORM SYSTEM WILL AFFECT THE REGION THIS WEEKEND WITH
THE POTENTIAL FOR STRONG TO ISOLATED SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS SATURDAY
NIGHT INTO SUNDAY. MORE HEAVY RAIN CAN BE EXPECTED WHICH WILL ONLY
WORSEN THE FLASH FLOOD SITUATION ACROSS THE AREA.

.SPOTTER CALL TO ACTION STATEMENT...

ACTIVATION OF STORM SPOTTERS AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PERSONNEL IS
POSSIBLE LATE TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY EVENING.

Here We Go

Thursday

Wednesday

Next 5 days

Well it seems we may be in for a rain pounding over the next 5 days. The HPC is predicting 4 plus inches by Sunday afternoon, and since we are already 2 inches in the hole for the year this will help. Now our confidence is building towards a few severe storms in here tonight roughly from an area from near Muscle Shoals to just west of Birmingham and points to the west including Walker and Tuscaloosa Counties. While we do not expect a wide spread outbreak a few storm s could develop and for that reason the SPC has issued a slight risk for West Alabama. This system should push out early on Thursday and then the sun should break out and if that happens the CAPE values look to climb to around 1500j/kg and with surface temps pushing near 70° we could see redevelopment as the front pushes in and those could really pack a punch. The main time frame for this is Noon to 6pm. And the SC sees this and has issued a slight risk for North Alabama. If severe weather breaks tonight or tomorrow I will be in the field and streaming live, and when I do go mobile I will post the link on twitter or you can just check the quick link on the blog home page.

Thursday Looking Interesting

Here is an update for Thursday. Note the image it shows the CAPE values for 3:00pm Thursday. It is in the 500j/kg range. Remember this is just a forecast output model and it depends on whether or not we get some sunshine during the day, if this happens and the CAPE does go up we could see some storms roll through Alabama as the fronts drags through. Also it does look as if Sunday could be rather stormy as well and with both systems we could see nearly 4" of rain between the 2.

Rainy End to January

It looks to be a rainy and possibly a stormy end to the month of January. The HPC has painted another 2" plus amounts for north and central Alabama over the next 5 days and this total does not include the system on Sunday. With the system on Wednesday and into Thursday we are looking at mainly a heavy rain event but we could hear a few rumbles of thunder mixed in as well. The lack of any surface based instability will keep our Thunderstorm threat to a minimum. Although the SPC has the far SW corner of Alabama in a Slight Risk for then mainly down on the Gulf Coast. It is now looking like I might have to dust of my chase gear a little early this season. The system that will impact us on Sunday looks very interesting as it has also caught the folks over at the SPCs attention as well. They have the southern 2/3 of Alabama in a severe weather risk right now at a 30% probability of severe weather from 25 miles of any given point. It looks to be a line around the Cullman-Blount County lines over to Walker and Tuscaloosa Counties to the south right now. This will be up dated later I am sure. A squall line will sweep in from the west on Sunday as the low pressure moves just to our north and drags the front behind it. This will be our first real severe weather threat of the new year so it will be watched closely. Stay tuned for more info.

Wet days Ahead

Well it looks as we could see some significant rains over the next 5 days. The HPC has the bulls eye down in the SE corner of Alabama and into the Florida panhandle, but from Mobile to Huntsville anyone could see 2" up to 4" in spots. We are still looking at the AO (arctic oscillation) going negative again towards the the last week of January into the first week of February. Not real sure how cold it will be or how long the cold will last. As for this system with little or no instability the threat of Severe Weather is not a problem they could be a few storms along the coast but the most unstable air is over the state of Florida. The Craven Brooks Significant Tornado Parameter puts an area right over the northern parts of the Florida Peninsula for Sunday. We have another system coming in next week a well that bares watching but right now not much more than rain is expected. Keep in mind Spring is right around the corner and we have had some very strong storms in the months of February and March as well.

Wet Weather On The Way

Well it looks as if we here in North Alabama are in for a good soaking over the weekend. We could see at the minimum of 1" in some areas( notice the HPS predictions.) Also another storm system could bring an additional 1"-2" by next Thursday as well. While the high for Madison today was still cool to some at only 44°, it was alot warmer than this time last week. We could very well continue to moderate into the upper 50s to low 60s by next week, but I do warn everyone "DO NOT GET USED TO IT". The Arctic Oscillation Index starts to trend negative again towards the end of the month and into February. February is known to be our coldest winter month so be prepared.

The Tennessee Fight Song The Fulmer Faithfull Are Singing

Wish that I was on old Rocky Top
To tell them to hire back Phil.
Ain't no better coach for Rocky Top
No one better than Phil.
2 SEC titles while at Rocky Top
And a national title on top of that,
With the heart of a Lion and the will to win,
The volunteer nation wants him back.

(Chorus)
Rocky Top, you'll always be
Home sweet home to me.
Good old Rocky Top,
Rocky Top, Tennessee.
Rocky Top, Tennessee.
They brought in coaches up to Rocky Top
looking to replace Phil.
You hired Lane Kiffin to win a title,
Reckon they never will.
Tears won’t fall at all on Rocky Top,
Like they did when Phil left town.
Now that Lane up and left Rocky Top
Guess Mike Hamilton is a clown.

(Repeat Chorus)
You had a year with the pretty boy coach,
And he left you with a hefty bill.
All I know if you want to win again,
You better bring back Phil.

(Repeat Chorus)
Rocky Top, Tennessee!

Wow What a Cold Snap.

Well it all started on Friday January 1 2010 at around 4pm. My thermometer dropped below 32° and as of Midnight tonight it will be a total of 230 hours ago. I have recorded only 2.5 hours above freezing since that time. We are not forecast to go above freezing until Monday , and right now I am at 27.1° so it does not look to threaten the streak. So 227.5 hours of below freezing temps, an average wind chill of 14.3°,average temps during this span of 26.3°, and 2 nights of single digit temps. Yes I did fall victim as well as my neighbors and had frozen pipes, although I did not have any burst. We look to have a nice warm up (in the 40s) over the next week with a chance of RAIN by next weekend. This by far is our coldest in a long time. I do not think that it is at all over we could see a couple more chance of snow and 1 or 2 more cold snaps before winter is all over.

Another Snow Chance on the 16th??

Noon Saturday the 16th

Midnight on Sunday the 17th

Noon on sunday the 17th

Let us take a look into the future ( or as James Spann says Voodoo country)here comes another system on or around the 16th of January looks as if we may see some strong storms early as the Low is centered near Florence Alabama and as it moves ENE the arap around moisture looks to be accompanied by another 540 line (rain/snow)and then another cold grasp looks to set up right over the Southeast. Remember this is way out there and it will change again and again and again. If this was to hold together it looks as if there would more than enough moisture for more snow. For all you snow lovers Lets cross our fingers and see if it holds.

Big bad Blizzard Of 2010

Well as with any snow event in Alabama expect the lower end of totals and hope for the higher end. I nailed my North Alabama prediction with the Trace to 2" totals and yes we got a good Trace. It may not have developed into the amounts first forecast, but as you can see my kids enjoyed themselves. When you are a 3 or a 4 year old just seeing it fall is good enough. For all snow lovers this is surely not our last chance this Winter.

Now we turn to the cold air.

Well some snow well wishers are very disappointed today as the snow did not meet expectations. There a few factors for this. 1) the snow moved in about 5 hours ahead of schedule and with that happening there was no chance for any of what little gulf moisture to be a factor.2) there was alot of sleet mixed in with the snow and when that happens it takes away from some of the accumulations. By looking at the current radar it looks now as if areas from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham can expect the most.

Here It Comes.

Well we now have some moisture in the air, it may or may not be reaching the ground just yet. Right now it is in Lauderdale and Colbert Counties and some counties in Middle Tennessee. These should be light with the more extensive coverage coming during the day on Thursday. Anyone in the shoals got snow? We would love to here from you.info@dixiealleyadventures.com

My Personal Opinion Updated

Here is where I feel like the most snow may occur. Remember that just because an area may say Trace to 2" there may be more or less depending on the bands as they come in. Also do not pay to much attention to forecast totals as the cold weather is going to be the real problem. We will see record breaking cold over the next few days. The forecast lows are near 8 degrees on Saturday morning but with a snow pack we could see below zero temps in some areas, and the wind chill factor will be below zero most all weekend. Please stay of the roads even if we only get a half inch of snow the roads will become impassable. The NWS has all of the Tennessee Valley under a winter weather advisory until late in the day on Thursday. The Snow should start to push into the Shoals area sometime around 10:00am and should be completely out of the area between midnight and 6;00am on Friday.

My Personal Opinion

Well this is my opinion on where the snow may fall. The models are starting to come together a little bit, but still are changing a little bit with each run. Please realize that accumulations will happen but totals are not really known right now. This is just my guess on where the snow will be.

Latest GFS Models

Here is the latest GFS image valid for Noon on Thursday. It shows the heavier precip for an area from near Birmingham to the South and West towards Tuscaloosa to the SW. areas south of Montgomery will probably see only a cold rain with a few flakes mixed in. each meteorologist is predicting areas different. The guys in Birmingham are saying a dusting to one inch in the Tennessee Valley area and 1 to 2 inches from Birmingham to Montgomery. The guys in Huntsville are say areas in the Valley could see 1-3 inches. I say areas around Birmingham will see more than Huntsville. But THAT MAY CHANGE. No run has been the same.

Some models Are Inconsistant

Candian

NAM

GFS

As you can see by these 3 models each one is valid for 6:00pm on Thursday. The NAM is a little slower and drier than the GFS, and the Canadian model shows the system tapping into a little more Gulf moisture. For all the snow lovers (like myself)lets all hope that is the case. There is a possibility that we may start out as sleet up here in the Tennessee Valley the change over to snow. Whatever the case it looks like it should be over and done sometime on Friday. It doe not matter if we get 1 inch or 5 inches with the temps as cold as they are the ground is frozen and roads could become slick. When the models come out on Tuesday we should have a real grasp on where the heavier amounts could be.

Snow Chances Look Real Good For Next Week.

6pm Thursday

Midnight Thursday night

6am Friday

Noon Friday

6pm Friday

I am posting this a little late with the next model run due out in a little while but I have been real busy. Here are the 6:00am runs for next week.
If you notice that around Midnight Alabama becomes inundated with heavy Snowfall with this run ( as much as 4 inches can be possible in areas north of I-20). As before it may change again and again. Stay tuned to your local news and other means of weather information. Remember the brutal cold weather we are experiencing now, because whatever snow does fall will be around for a while because we may sta below freezing throughout the weekend.

Another Snow Chance???

This is a long way out but the 18z run of the GFS for Wednesday the 13th looks like another chance for wintry precipitation and possibly a severe weather chance along the Gulf Coast. This is sure to change with time because you cannot really expect runs this far out to be truthful.

Snow Chances Look Good For Next Week. FOR NOW

18z (noon) GFS for Thursday

00z (6pm) GFS for Thursday

06z GFS (midnight) on Friday

12z GFS (6am) Friday

Well will wonders never cease? The Latest runs of the GFS still show a decent little snow storm for Alabama and other parts of the Southeast next Thursday into Friday. It looks real good right now (the track of the Low),but remember it may all disapear on the next run or two. With the current track if (and I am saying I IF) Snow amounts could be as little as 2" for areas near Birmingham to near 4"+ near Huntsville. And with the next surge of cold air coming in on Friday the Highs may not get out of the 20's with lows in the single digits in some areas ( with a snow pack some lows may be near 0). Please do not rn out and hoard milk and bread this may all change. The models that come out Sunday night and Monday should have a better fix on if we get any or not. Keep in mind even without the snow we are in for some extremely cold temperatures this week. If you know someone that does not have adequate heat please check on them each day. More to come tomorrow night.
